The INRFOOD app scans food item barcodes through your smartphone’s camera, analyzes the ingredients, and then tells you which are healthy, which you should avoid and which you should eat in moderation by highlighting them in green, red and yellow, respectively. Adjust your settings for specific health concerns: If you have a peanut allergy, for example, the app can warn you not to eat foods that may contain peanuts. Tap the ingredient and you’ll be taken to a new screen with tabs for information, articles and videos, and a discussion forum. It also records the food product and stores it on your “plate” to analyze how often you eat certain ingredients. This brand new app was developed in Durham and is constantly being updated with new foods. As the database of food items expands, the INRFOOD app is going to become a valuable tool for conscientious label-readers.
