5K to raise funds for student service trips to Nepal and Sam’s House

The first Run for the Children, presented by Prestige, will take place on May 3 at 9 a.m. in downtown Burlington, N.C. This fundraiser will provide two Alamance County High School students the opportunity to travel to Nepal this summer to volunteer at Sam’s House.

Sam’s House is a 20-child orphanage in the suburbs of Pokhora. Their mission is to provide a home, family, education and love to abandoned children in Nepal. Prestige for Nepal shares their belief that love, security and education are essential rights that enable children to thrive and contribute to their communities.

Prestige, which is producing this event, was founded by three college students from Alamance County: Kendal McBroom (Hampton University), Dezian Lathan (Chowan University), and Keegan Pace (UNC-Chapel Hill). Through exposure to a third-world country and service to those in need, Prestige hopes to provide these students with a  life-changing experience and equip them with the skills necessary to effect change within their own community. The trip also serves as a means to promote cultural and religious tolerance while reminding us that unity and brotherhood are principles that transcend belief and background.

Runners, as well as walkers, are welcome in this event and there will be a half-mile fun run for the kids. Participants who register by April 1 are guaranteed a T-shirt at packet pick-up. In addition to refreshments before and after the race, there will be family-friendly events in downtown Burlington to enjoy post-race. The local farmers market, Company Shops Community Cooperative, and live music are just a few of the planned activities.

Registration is open at SPORToften.com and you can get updates by liking the Run for the Children Facebook page at www.facebook.com/prestigerunforthechildren.
