“Friends that I have invited have said, ‘OMG I can’t do that!’ I then feel more proud as I respond ‘If I can do it, anyone can!’”

Joline Hodges, 57 | Durham, NC | Recovery Room RN

In 2005 two nursing colleagues invited me to participate in the Virginia Beach Half Marathon through Team in Training. I have completed many half marathons since that first one. When I saw an ad in Endurance Magazine for the Ramblin Rose sprint triathlon, I thought that it would be an awesome way to broaden my competitive interests. The participants being women of all ages and sizes inspired me to register.

During my first Ramblin’ Rose I persuaded both my daughters to join me. In each of two subsequent Ramblin’ Rose’s one daughter or the other also participated. My most memorable moment was crossing the finish line with my two daughters and thinking, “I did it, I am awesome!” Sharing this moment with my family was incredible.

I have lost 35 pounds since my first Ramblin’ Rose. I still have a ways to go and I feel training is my path to a healthier, more active lifestyle. Plus, each event has become a family adventure.

My most supportive person is my daughter/coach, Rachel. Every time I mention being too old, too fat or too tired she comes back with a funny quip that provides a dose of love and encouragement.

In 2017 my events will, once again, include a Ramblin’ Rose, the Rock n’ Roll Raleigh Half Marathon and, maybe, the Rock n’ Roll Half in Las Vegas.
