OctBlog_2015_10_Oct_Editor_Pg6_1Now in its 11th year, the Ramblin’ Rose Women’s Triathlon family continues to grow. Since the first event in Chapel Hill in October 2006 nearly 30,000 women have become Ramblin’ Rose triathletes. In addition to welcoming these new triathletes to the Ramblin’ Rose family, we also welcome the husbands, sons, fathers, brothers and other family and friends who come out to support their soon-to-be triathlete on race day. The signs, shirts and cheers of an athlete’s support crew help define the magical moment of a Ramblin’ Rose woman becoming a triathlete. Endurance Magazine is proud to kick off this season with our annual Ramblin’ Rose Triathlon Guide. In addition to information about our events we also share the stories of a few women who have been participating in Ramblin’ Rose for years.

We also feature the story of Kate Biegler from Raleigh, NC. Kate first participated in Ramblin’ Rose in 2014. She loved Ramblin’ Rose so much she immediately knew she wanted to do another to relive the experience. However, she had no idea how different her life would be when she participated in her next Ramblin’ Rose event in Raleigh in 2015. Be sure to read Kate’s story and learn about the challenges she overcame to cross a Ramblin’ Rose finish line once more.

Deciding to participate in your first, or even second, triathlon is certainly a great way to shake things up in the New Year. If you are ready to sign up and need a plan Endurance Magazine has you covered! But, before jumping in to our 12-week training plan created by ActivEdge’s Brian Diaz, you will want to be sure you have addressed any nagging physiological limitations to your ability to do exercise. Seek out your favorite Physical Therapist (or find one in this issue!) to have a Functional Movement Screen done as well as a thorough overhaul of past history and ailments.  After that, you can jump right into our triathlon training plan designed to get you through your first super sprint or sprint triathlon.

Experienced triathletes looking for their next big race can look no further than Greenville, SC. Long known as one of the South Carolina’s most popular destinations for shopping, dining and entertainment, Greenville will soon be known for the new Mountains to Main Street Race Festival featuring a half iron distance triathlon and a half marathon. You will definitely want to spend this weekend in Greenville for this brand new race and awesome vacation spot for active families. Check out our event preview to learn more about this exciting new race for long distance triathletes.

All triathletes regardless of experience level could do themselves a world of good by focusing on proper recovery. One thing we often miss when thinking about recovery is a good night’s sleep. This month, Susanne Sullivan, one of our awesome Ramblin’ Rose triathlon race directors reviews a new recovery product on the market: the Bear Mattress. The manufacturers of this new mattress claim to have created a mattress built especially for athletes and persons who live the active lifestyle. They worked with experts around the world to design a mattress they say is universally comfortable, improves sleep quality and increases your energy… all at an incredibly affordable price. Be sure to read Susanne’s review to see if the mattress lives up to it’s billing.

As always, we have another great healthy recipe for you: Quinoa (keen-wah) Cakes with Lemon Yogurt Sauce. Easy to prepare, this month’s recipe can be a meal in itself. While it is a great vegetarian option as a main course, these quinoa cakes can also be a nice accompaniment to some roasted vegetables, too. For those looking to get some extra protein and fiber into their diet without having to prepare multiple items, then this recipe is a convenient and tasty solution.

As always, be sure to check out our many other great reviews, exercises, and previews and get ready for an awesome New Year!
