5K run to raise funds for student scholarships and the American Red Cross

The 49er Gold Rush 5K, presented by Novant Health, will take place on Feb. 1 at 9 a.m. This year’s 5k will honor kinesiology lecturer and aquatic director Roy Fielding. Fielding suffered a massive heart attack in December 2007, and walked in the 5K in 2008 and each year since to help raise awareness for heart disease. Proceeds from the 5k help fund UNC Charlotte student-development scholarships and direct donations are taken for the American Red Cross.

Formerly known as the Homecoming 5K, the race has become a very popular event kicking off the month of February. Race director Kemet Gatchell says the event “is enjoyed both by year-round runners and Couch-to-5K participants, as the timing of the event coincides well with New Year’s resolutions.”

The 2013 race attracted a record 724 participants and raised $5,024 for UNC Charlotte student-development scholarships. The event also raised much-needed money for the American Red Cross to aid with superstorm Sandy relief.

Everyone is encouraged to participate in the 5k, including students, faculty and staff, alumni, and the Charlotte community. UNC Charlotte students who register before the early bird deadline, Jan. 14, will receive a student discount. “Registration is now open at http://recservices.uncc.edu/signature/5k and we are pleased to offer online registration with no additional fees,” says Gatchell.

Participants who register by Jan. 14 are guaranteed a long-sleeved commemorative T-shirt. There are numerous age-group awards as well as awards for top students, faculty and staff, alumni, and community members. Runners and walkers can enjoy both pre- and post-race refreshments. Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Dr. Ted Elling, a long-time participant, says, “It’s a challenging course because of the hills, but it’s a great way to see some of the landscape of the ever-changing UNC Charlotte campus!”
