The Tar Heel 10 Miler Presented by CEP was the second event of the 2013 Endurance Magazine USATF NC Long Distance Championship. Earlier in the month runners competed in the BB&T Gate City 8K championship race. Brock Baker of Chapel Hill jumped out to an early lead in the series, winning both events. In the masters division, Bill Shires of Charlotte took second place in both events, giving him a one-point lead on the first-place finishers in each of the races.  

 

Baker took the USATF NC 10 Mile Championship with his win at the Tar Heel 10 Miler Presented by CEP. Baker’s time of 51:56 outpaced second-place finisher Tibor Vegh of Cary by just 19 seconds. Bobby Torphy of Chapel Hill took third. In the women’s race, Kristina Vegh of Cary broke the 1-hour mark for a first-place finish. Vegh’s time of 59:53 was just 7 seconds faster than Cary resident Michelle Langan’s time of 1:00:00. Loring Crowley of Winston-Salem finished third. Both the men’s and women’s masters division saw close races as well. In the men’s race, Michael Dwomoh of Raleigh finished in 1:00:09, just 10 seconds ahead of Bill Shires of Charlotte. In the women’s race, Robyn Holland of Winston-Salem beat Southern Pines’ Deb Ryan by 28 seconds. Holland finished in 1:06:53. David Schwerbrock of Cary and Susan Chesser of Durham took third-place honors in the masters division.

 

Earlier in the month, Brock Baker won the BB&T Gate City 8K championship race, finishing in just 24:48. Paul Springer of Cary was second and Chad Newton of Pisgah Forest was third. Newton’s time of 27:11 also gave him the win in the masters division, outpacing Bill Shires by more than 1 minute. John Hinton of Chapel Hill took third. The women’s race saw Caitlin Bullock of Charlotte run a 28:40 for first-place honors in the open division. Greensboro’s Ginny Cronley was close behind with a 28:54, while Marissa Ryan took third. Jennifer Curtin of Raleigh dominated the women’s masters race and won by more than 5 minutes with a time of 33:08. Robin McCloskey of Brown Summit and Ophelia Moore of Greensboro took second and third, respectively.
