Chapel Hill was the place to be April 21st as Endurance Magazine’s Wells Fargo Tar Heel 10 Miler Presented by CEP provided another great community and running experience with perfect weather, a beautiful course, and a celebrity starter in 2012 US Marathon Olympic Trials Champion and inspiration, Meb Keflezighi.  More than 4,200 people were signed up to race the 10 Miler and the 4+ Miler Presented by Fleet Feet Sports Carrboro.

Next up in the Endurance Magazine race production schedule is the Ramblin’ Rose Women’s Triathlon in Raleigh.  There’s still time to register for this inspiring experience, so please visit www.ramblinroseevents.com and click on the SPORToften registration button!  If you’re searching for our next community and running experience, sign up for our Duke Medicine Ramblin’ Rose Women’s Half Marathon.  The event is open to men and women and will once again be supported by InsideOut Sports, New Balance Raleigh-Durham, and Bull City Running.  Please take some time to visit these great stores for gear and advice on running this beautiful and scenic course.

For those looking for a more competitive experience, The Capital City Classic 10K and the Running of the Bulls 8K are the next two races in our NC USATF 2012 Long Distance Running Championship Series.  The Capital City Classic takes place May 12th in Raleigh and the Running of the Bulls, produced by Bull City Running, takes place June 2nd in Durham.  If you participated in the Tar Heel 10 Miler and still had your wits about you at the top of Laurel Hill, you saw the smiling faces of Bull City Running owners Jason and Kim Page manning the timing table.

While it’s easy to smile at the top of Laurel Hill (especially when you’re not running it!) it’s not so easy to smile when you’re staring down the barrel of a nearly 1,000-mile run.  But, in the few times I’ve talked to famed ultra runner Diane Van Deren, I’ve never seen her not smile at the thought of running North Carolina’s unique and diverse Mountains to Sea Trail.  Diane will be kicking off her record-setting attempt on May 10 at Clingman’s Dome.  You can read more about Diane, her battle with epilepsy, and the national treasure that is our Mountains to Sea Trail in this issue’s extensive coverage.

With the help of The Great Outdoor Provision Co., Diane will be geared up to tackle the diverse terrain of the trail.  Great Outdoor Provision Co. is a great resource for all your hiking, camping and trail gear, but don’t forget to check out our summer trail shoe guide to find some good kicks for your summer trail running.  To help you fuel up for your outdoor experience this summer, Brandon McDearis provides a great recipe for your very own energy gel.

In other departments, our cycling columnist Victor Jimenez was lucky enough to score an interview with Chris Carmichael, the National Spokesperson for American Diabetes Association 2012 Tour de Cure.  The NC Tour de Cure, which is chaired by Thomas Henson, Jr., takes place June 2.  Endurance Magazine was also lucky to get some great cycling and safety advice from Henson to accompany our Tour de Cure coverage and Chris Carmichael interview.

As always, don’t forget to read all our event previews and the other great features in this issue of Endurance Magazine.
