The fourth annual Allscripts Tobacco Road Marathon & Bay Six Half Marathon is set for St. Patrick’s Day, Sunday, March 17, 2013. The half-marathon is sold out again for this year, but we have opened some charity slots, with all the proceeds going to our great benefactors. This year we are excited to present a newly designed finisher’s medal that features a replica of an old tobacco train that used to run on the American Tobacco Trail hauling products from Chatham County to downtown Durham many years ago.
The Tobacco Road Marathon is the first of its kind to embrace the town of Cary and the scenic country roads of western Wake County as well as the American Tobacco Trail. The marathon features more than 20 miles of the American Tobacco Trail and the half-marathon has more than seven miles on the trail. The American Tobacco Trail is a recreational trail located on an abandoned railroad grade of the Norfolk Southern Railroad. The course is fairly flat, both races are USA Track & Field (USATF) certified and the marathon is a Boston qualifier. Both races start at 7 a.m. at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary. The normal average temperature for the race is a perfect running temperature of 50 degrees F. So wear your green, enjoy a fantastic award-winning local race and we’ll see you at the finish line for a celebratory St. Patty’s Day drink!
Over past three years Tobacco Road Marathon presented checks totaling $200,000 to the Triangle Rails to Trails Conservancy, Wake County Parks and Recreation, the Wounded Warriors Project and the American Red Cross. In November 2012, the marathon’s organizing committee, led by Kazem Yahyapour, donated $10,000 to the Triangle Chapter of the American Red Cross for its Hurricane Sandy relief fund.
For 2013, Allscripts has become the Tobacco Road Marathon’s new title sponsor. In addition to the Wounded Warriors Project, American Red Cross and Triangle Rails to Trails Conservancy, the Allscripts Tobacco Road Marathon is pleased to add JDRF as a new beneficiary in 2013. JDRF is the leading global organization focused on type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Driven by passionate, grassroots volunteers connected to children, adolescents and adults with this disease, JDRF is now the largest charitable supporter of T1D research. The goal of JDRF research is to improve the lives of all people affected by T1D by accelerating progress on the most promising opportunities for curing, better treating and preventing T1D. JDRF collaborates with a wide spectrum of partners who share this goal.
Since its founding in 1970, JDRF has awarded more than $1.6 billion to diabetes research. Past JDRF efforts have helped to significantly advance the care of people with this disease, and have expanded the critical scientific understanding of T1D. JDRF will not rest until T1D is fully conquered. More than 80 percent of JDRF’s expenditures directly support research and research-related education.
