Event Preview: Third-Annual IronKids Raleigh

Centennial Campus at NC State – June 24

On Sunday, June 24, IronKids will hold the IronKids Raleigh triathlon, drawing youth ranging from 6 to 15 years of age. The event, taking place on the Centennial Campus at NC State, will feature a swim in Lake Raleigh and a bike on closed roads and run on grass and paved trails throughout the park.

“The IronKids mission is to inspire and motivate youth through sport to lead an active, positive and healthy lifestyle,” said Michelle Payette, director of IronKids. “We are excited that IronKids is returning for a third year to beautiful Raleigh and to the NC State Centennial Campus.”

The third-annual event will feature three age group divisions: Junior, ages 6 to 8; Intermediate, ages 9 to 11; and Senior, ages 12 to 15.  Participants in the Senior division will begin at 7 a.m. and follow a course that includes a 300-yard swim, 8-mile bike and 2-mile run.  Athletes in the Intermediate division will begin the race at 8:30 a.m. with a 150-yard swim, followed by a 4-mile bike and 1-mile run. The Junior division will enter the water at 9:30 a.m., swimming 50 yards and then biking 2 miles and running 500 yards.  All finishers will receive a commemorative medal and trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age group.  The top five finishers in each age group will qualify for the Hy-Vee IronKids U.S. Championship presented by Dole.

In addition to the race, the series offers an interactive weekend experience for the entire family. The IronKids Expo, registration and packet pick-up will take place at NC State’s Centennial Campus on Saturday, July 23, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and there will also be a course talk at 1 p.m. Registration and packet pick-up will re-open on race morning from 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m.
