Editor's
Note
In 2013, when I was 43, I set a PR in the half iron triathlon distance
by nearly 15 minutes. Less than a year later I set PR’s in the 5K and
half marathon distance. Having consistently participated in triathlons
and running events for nearly 10 years at that point, I was proud to be
faster at 43 than [Read

A
Reason to Run | Wendell & Myra John
I initially had no interest in running, training, sweating, crying,
cramping, or enduring the pain involved with training for— or even
completing— an endurance event. Sure I would dabble in running with a
short jog on the treadmill at the gym or grimace while watching clips
of the Boston or New York [Read

GEAR
REVIEW - Vazee
2090
I
have always been a fan of cushioned running shoes, even throughout the
minimalist era. I love the plush feel of New Balance’s fresh foam line
of shoes— a bit more cushioning than traditional cushioned shoes but,
not over-the-top Hoka-inspired cushioning— and have run mostly in fresh
foam shoes for a few years. This year, however, I wanted to switch
things up so I decided to try New Balance’s Vazee 2090. While I don’t
believe a well-cushioned shoe hinders speed as I have heard some
runners complain I do believe that less cushioning “feels” faster and
at my age, I need all the help I can get— a well-designed shoe,
perceived speed, [read

Food
for Fuel - Roasted Curried Cauliflower
Cauliflower is a member of the cabbage family that has many uses in
cooking. It is often a great low-glycemic substitute for potatoes in
purees and gratins, and it is a nice addition to stir-fries and
vegetable medleys. It is often overlooked on its own as a key vegetable
to be paired with a meal, but when roasted with a little oil and salt,
it turns succulently sweet and caramel brown. This month’s recipe turns
the dial on the flavor profile of roasted cauliflower up several
notches. The sweetness of the coconut oil and the maple syrup [read more]

Marathon Swimming
When you think about swimming, what is the
first thing that pops into your head? For most people, images of a pool
with crystal blue water come to mind. However, if they’ve grown up
swimming on a competitive team, it’s often the smell of chlorine, lane
lines, thoughts of spending hours staring [read

Core Corner - Step Back Lunge with Single Arm
Row
Efficient running requires a stable-stance leg from which you can drive
your body forward. Connecting the power of the stance leg to a stable
torso with opposite arm rotation improves the efficiency of running.
The Step Back Lunge with Single Arm Row, one of my favorite exercises,
can work all of the [read more]

Train
for a Reason and a Purpose
As
the New Year wanes and spring starts creeping in with hints of warmer
weather ahead, many of us hit the outdoors for the beautiful period
when it’s not too hot to get out and do what we love to do. For some of
us, that often means dropping the resistance training added in the
winter to help build strength in the “off-season”, to make room for
more running, cycling, paddling, hiking, or swimming.
While I realize most of us are strapped for time, I want to help you
maximize your time so that your training has a focus, your workouts a
purpose. For almost all of you, that simply means modifying your [read more]
