Dear Athlete,
Congratulations! You've taken the first step (to be followed by a first stroke and a first pedal) toward one of the most amazing events you'll ever participate in. Working closely with an experienced mentor, you'll find yourself getting stronger, faster and more confident than you've ever been in your life.
I participated in my first triathlon six years ago as a way to help me lose weight. And, yes, I did shed a few pounds, but I gained so very much more: health, wellness and a fire in my belly that has yet to go out. I also have gained friends as we ran, biked and swam our way to better health. And it's that sense of friendship within a wider community that led me to join with other women triathletes and attempt to bring more of you into our sport.
In my job as a doctor, I see women every day who are devoted to their jobs and family, but they spend so little time on themselves. They get depressed and overwhelmed. I believe if they focused on themselves, even for a short time each day, they would be better mothers, wives and partners. They would be better at living their own lives.
In 2007, during our first year, we had almost 140 women cross the finish line at the Ramblin' Rose Triathlon here in Charlotte. Every single woman in our Ramblin' 100 group who started the race, finished the race. Those who participated, both athletes and mentors, were so excited we all decided to do it again. To celebrate that idea, we've changed our name to Tri It For Life, to reflect what we hope will be your life-long interest in your own health, well-being and competitive spirit.
What you've decided to do will be difficult, but you're a woman, you're used to doing the difficult things and doing them well. The rewards will be worth the effort. You'll have a great time and you'll make many new friends. Try it once and we think you'll Tri It For Life.
Sincerely,
Alyse Kelly-Jones
