VOLUNTEERS - SEE IMPORTANT MESSAGE BELOW RE: TRAINING PARTY!
Here's your chance to help thousands of runners reach their goal of successfully crossing the finish line. Our volunteers are THE most important factor in truly making this North Carolina's Premier Running Experience!
Endurance Magazine events are known for being extremely well-organized in every regard, including volunteer management! So sign up today and be sure to invite a family member, friend, or group to join you. We'll do our best to team you together as volunteering is ALWAYS more fun when you are able to do it with people you know!
Volunteering is a great way to promote a group, company, or organization. We would love to feature you on our website.

PRE RACE TRAINING PARTY: APRIL 6TH All volunteers are asked to attend the Pre-Race Training on April 6th. This will be located at the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA at 980 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC 27514 from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm. We will meet at the outside field, behind the YMCA building, weather pending. The indoor gym is our back-up location if it is too wet. We will have food and drinks for you to enjoy.
Agenda: /// Arrive & collect goody bags & race day equipment /// Welcome from Race Director & Volunteer Captain /// Thank you from Benefactor Representatives /// Course Logistics Information /// General Volunteer Information /// Introduction of Zone Captains /// Break for food /// Zone Meetings /// Final Q & A
Parking Information: We have been asked by the YMCA NOT to park in the front parking area. These spaces are reserved for members of the Y. There is a gravel lot located behind the YMCA building where volunteers can park (this is actually closer to our meeting site). There is also a church, Amity United Methodist Church located next to the YMCA that is an option for parking, should the gravel lot become full. Please park in the gravel lot of Amity if needed. The entrance to Amity is off Estes Drive, but you can walk from the church lot to the YMCA lot without needing to walk along Estes or MLK Jr Blvd.
VOLUNTEER ASSIGNMENTS & MAPS: Volunteer assignments and maps will be e-mailed out Monday evening or Tuesday morning. I will also provide suggested parking areas dependent upon your zone. PLEASE take the time to review the maps and your assignments, and print a copy for yourself. I will also include a “Frequently Asked Questions” document so that you have general information that participants and spectators may ask. We hope all volunteers can be “ambassadors” on race day and can provide the important information needed by those who attend. Also, please note that there may be some last minute changes to the assignments between Tuesday and Saturday. A link will be posted on the volunteer page of the 10-Miler website, so be sure to check that link one last time before going to bed Friday evening!

TESTIMONIAL: "As a volunteer for the Wachovia Tar Heel 10 Miler last year, I was very well informed prior to and during race day. The race team gave detailed information regarding what my role would be, what I needed to know for my safety and the safety of others, and reminded us that the goal was to make it fun with our smiles and cheers. On race day, I felt welcomed from the start, and really felt that I was important and making a difference." - Maya L, Chapel Hill resident
AVAILABLE Volunteer Position & SHIFTs You will have a chance to indicate which of the following positions and shifts you wish to work during the online registration.
***COURSE MONITORS NEEDED! Please consider signing up for this role over others.***
Pre-Race Expo This year the Wachovia Tar Heel 10 Miler will include a 2-day pre-race expo at The Franklin Hotel, the Official Host Hotel for the event. The expo will allow runners to explore all that the event and the town has to offer. Expo will take place on Thursday, April 7th and 8th.
Volunteer duties will include welcoming the runners, providing athletes with registration materials including race number/bib, working in the merchandise area, distributing freebies/goodies, handing out participant t-shirts and assisting with vendor tables and timing chip activation. Volunteers will also need to be able to answer general questions runners may have, which will be covered during the volunteer training event.
Available Shifts: Thursday, April 7th: 10:30 AM-2:00 PM OR 2:00-7:00 PM Friday, April 8th: 10:30 AM-2:00 PM OR 2:00-7:00 PM

Race Day Packet Pick-Up Come to the start area on Stadium Drive to help set-up the start area and create an atmosphere of excitement and friendly competition. Your home base will be the Packet Pick-Up tables, where runners who have not yet picked up their materials will be checked in prior to 7:00 am. Volunteers will assist with distributing bibs, participant t-shirts and timing chips.
Shift: 5:15-8:00 AM Race Day, April 9th

Parking Parking Lot Monitors will direct & assist participants parking in the designated event parking lot. Volunteers assigned to the path will direct participants from the designated parking lot to Stadium Drive where the Start Area is located. 1-2 parking monitors will be assigned to guard Rams Head Deck entrance and keep participants from parking in this deck.
Shift: 6:00-7:45 AM Race Day, April 9th

Start Line Ambassadors These volunteers get to wear many hats! Prior to the runners’ arrival, we’ll need your manpower to set-up the start area and create an atmosphere of excitement and friendly competition. Once participants arrive, you will become a walking information booth! Volunteers in this area will have course maps, finish line information &will float around the start area to answer runners’ FAQs. You will be in the midst of high energy and excitement as the runners prepare for the race, so be ready for an uplifting morning! Once the 10 mile runners have started and looped back through Stadium Drive, we’ll need your help to get the start line ready for the 4 mile runners.
Shift: 6:30-8:30 AM Race Day, April 9th

Start Line Corral Monitors These volunteers will also be asked to help out in a few different ways. Prior to the runners’ arrival, we’ll need your hands on deck to set-up the start area and create an atmosphere of excitement and friendly competition. Once the start area begins to fill up, Corral Monitors will assist the runners as they line up behind the start line according to their expected running time (minutes/mile). Monitors will have signs marked with these times, and will want to have a voice ready to cheer the runners on when the gun goes off.
Shift: 6:30-8:30 AM Race Day, April 9th

Course Monitors You are the GPS system that runners most appreciate and cannot do without. Volunteers along the course are there to first-and-foremost provide safety to the runners and spectators. And it certainly makes this job more enjoyable to provide cheers of support and encouragement as the runners pass you by. This is a long, 10-mile course, so course monitor volunteers will work within smaller teams under the direction of team captains according to the course “zones” (campus, downtown, Gimghoul, etc). Volunteers will have flags, cow bells, and will need a loud voice to direct and cheer on the runners as they pass. If you enjoy being on the front lines, this is the job for you!
Shift: 6:30-10:00 AM Race Day, April 9th

Finish Line Set-Up The best part of a race is finishing, right? Help us make the finish line experience unforgettable for our runners. We’ll need you early, but you get to leave early too. Tasks include setting up tables, sorting medals, posting banners, setting up refreshments, etc.
Shift: 5:30-7:30 AM Race Day, April 9th

Finish Line Runner Escorts After crossing the finish line, the tired yet excited runners will need to be escorted from the finish area to the refreshments area, where they can cool down, relax, and meet up to celebrate with family & friends. The finish line area is a definite “hot spot” that will need to remain clear so that all runners have a positive finish. As a volunteer in this area, we will need your smiles, enthusiasm, and assertiveness in escorting the runners to a safe space away from the busy finish line. Once the last runner crosses the line and awards have been distributed, you’ll shift into clean up mode and help the team get the finish line tidied up.
Shift: 7:00-10:30 AM Race Day, April 9th

Finish Line Assistants As the runners cross the finish line, the real celebration begins! This role involves handing out medals & water bottles to each individual as they cross the finish line. The finish line is a very exciting but busy area, so don’t be surprised if we ask you to assist in some other activities. Once the medals have been distributed, you’ll become a member of the clean-up crew and help the team get the stadium cleaned up. Shift: 7:00-11:00 AM Race Day, April 9th
Refreshments Here's your chance to serve runners a well-deserved snack and/or cold drink when they cross the finish line. Pre-race activities include setting up tables, water coolers, cutting bagels, and more. Once the finishers start pouring in, you'll be serving refreshments, keeping the area organized and presentable, and perhaps even handing out a few high fives! Shift: 7:00-11:00 AM Race Day, April 9th
VOLUNTEER TRAINING PARTY! ALL volunteers are kindly asked to attend the pre-race volunteer training party on the evening of Wednesday, April 6th to learn about emergency contingencies, race schedule & safety issues. This is also our chance to thank you for your amazing support of this event. Each volunteer will get an awesome GIFT BAG full of goodies, and tasty food and beverages will be served!
IMPORTANT REMINDER Volunteers are the most important part of a well organized and successful event. Every little task and detail is important to the overall athlete experience. The day, time of day and activity that you help with is very important. Please don't sign up to volunteer until you are sure that you will be able to be there. Each person has an intricate role; no shows can really cause great difficulties from the planning stage to the execution stage of the race. We ask that you report on time and stay on task for the duration of your shift.
