The endurance-sports community has an amazing propensity for doing good. When tragedy strikes, like the horrific bombing in Boston, people and businesses in the endurance-sports community mobilize and form teams and events to help those affected. It’s what we do.

On Saturday, April 20, at 7:30 a.m., 5,000 runners will take to the streets of Chapel Hill for Tar Heel 10 Miler Presented by CEP and the Fleet Feet 4+ Mile Run – the largest running event in the history of UNC and Chapel Hill. Both race courses wind through some of the most beautiful areas of Chapel Hill and end in Kenan Stadium. The Endurance Magazine team isn’t going to let the fun stop at the finish in Kenan Stadium this year. We’re busy planning another fabulous event: The Bull City Race Fest and Food Truck Rodeo. This inaugural race will showcase historic, downtown Durham on Oct. 20. This fall festival has something for the fastest runners and families alike. Choose from half-marathon, 5-mile and 1-mile distances and enjoy a crisp fall morning of running and post-race food. The Bull City Race Fest is the culmination of a world-class running experience and a world-class eating experience all in a world-class city! So, don’t forget to check out our event previews for both of these amazing events.

Last November, with the announcement that Bill Rodgers would close his last running store in Boston, The New York Times published an article on their opinion pages proclaiming that it signaled the beginning of the end for local running stores, which seemed doomed to be replaced by big box stores. I do agree that the closing of Rodgers’ store represents the end of an era – just not the era of local running stores. With so many adults taking up running for the first time in their lives and so many more shoe and gear choices than ever before, the local running store isn’t going anywhere. Whether you’re an adult-onset runner like me, a former elite, or maybe a one-time athlete trying to get back into shape after a career-marriage-children detour, you’ll want to read D.C. Luchessi’s article “This Ain’t Your Father’s Running Shop” to find out why local running stores are more relevant than ever.

January is the month my wife and I plan our summer vacation and our children’s summer camp schedule. Once those things are in place, I’m free to plan my season of endurance events. While I’ve already committed to racing Ironman 70.3 Raleigh in June, I still have lots of planning ahead to determine what races I’ll run in preparation of that event, not to mention races I’ll be able to run once I recover from it. I won’t put the finishing touches on my race season planning until I can sit down with a cup of coffee and this issue of our annual event guide.

A Ramblin’ Rose triathlon participant once said, “You sign up alone, but finish as a family.” How true that is! Now in its eighth year, the Ramblin’ Rose Women’s Triathlon family continues to grow by the thousands each year. In addition to welcoming new triathletes to the Ramblin’ Rose family, we also welcome the husbands, sons, fathers, brothers, and other family and friends who come out to support their soon-to-be triathlete on race day. The signs, shirts, and cheers that an athlete’s support crew, like the 26-person-strong Team Eishia, bring to the race help define the magical moment of a Ramblin’ Rose woman becoming a triathlete. You can see Eishia and her entire team on pages 28 and 29 (yes, we needed two pages to show the whole team!). Beatrice Yaxley of Tamara Lackey Photography captured the amazing image, as well as all the other great Ramblin’ Rose images in this issue. Be sure to read the inspirational stories of the awesome women that Beatrice caught in our event-day photo booth.
