Ramblin’ Rose Women’s Half Marathon to Benefit the Duke Cancer Institute
DURHAM, NC - June 29, 2011 - The Duke Cancer Institute has been selected by Endurance Magazine as their primary charity partner for the inaugural Duke Medicine Ramblin' Rose Women's Half Marathon, to be held in Durham on October 16th, 2011.
The Duke Cancer Institute (DCI) integrates and aligns patient care and research with the goals of improving patient outcomes, decreasing the burden of cancer and accelerating scientific progress. The DCI is one of only
40 centers in the country designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a "comprehensive cancer center" and is consistently ranked among the best hospitals in the country for cancer care.
"We are honored to be chosen as the primary beneficiary of this event that celebrates the empowerment of women and community health and wellness," says Karen Cochran, Executive Director of Development for the DCI. "Ultimately, when race participants donate to the Duke Cancer Fund, their donation supports the work of our scientists and care providers who share our goal of discovering new ways to treat cancer and providing the most advanced care for our patients."
Steve Lackey, founder of the Ramblin' Rose Event Series and publisher of Endurance Magazine, says: "We continually hear stories about how cancer touches peoples' lives. Fortunately, however, we also hear about the strides being made in cancer research and care methods. The Duke Cancer Institute is one of the leading cancer institutes in the country and puts Durham on the map as a center of innovation in cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. We couldn't imagine creating an event that showcases the best of Durham and not include the DCI as a beneficiary."
Lackey continues, "We are invigorated by the opportunity to raise awareness for the mission and goals of the Duke Cancer Institute. For our team and for the community, this is an exciting partnership."
There are two ways Ramblin' Rose will raise money for the DCI. First, registrants will have the opportunity to donate as part of their registration. Second, those who use the promo code dukecancerfund10 will save $10 on their registration fee and activate a $5 donation to the Duke Cancer Fund.
