“I’ve never done a triathlon before and wanted my first experience with one to be a shared experience with my friends.”
Frine Carbonell, 46
IT Director - Chapel Hill
By participating as a relay team, we were able to support and motivate each other. We were each able to do the leg of the event we felt strongest at. I’ve always been active but mostly in team sports. As I’ve gotten older and my family and career responsibilities made committing to a team difficult, I wanted to stay active and still challenge myself. I’ve always run and swam, so the next logical thing to do was buy a bike and start to race.
“This race epitomizes everything I believe in: community and friendship, staying fit, and having fun.”

I participated on “The Lovely Ladies” relay team with Frine Carbonell and Kathy Spitz. We were first-time triathletes and wanted to do it as a team. I loved that it was all women. All age groups were out there supporting each other.
It was great to see the super athletes to the average mom.
“It is a great way to work towards a goal and now I can say I did a triathlon. Training and racing with all women is a wonderful experience.”
