DURHAM,N.C.–FEBRUARY 13, 2008–USA Triathlon just announced that the 2008 Carrboro Classic Long Course Duathlon Regional Championships, part of the Carrboro Classic Endurance Sports Festival held in Carrboro, NC, has been selected as one of only four long course duathlons in the country to offer Long Course Duathlon World Championships (Team USA) qualifying slots.  The Long Course Duathlon World Championships will take place in Geel, Belgium on August 10.

Scheduled for April 6th 2008, the Carrboro Classic Endurance Sports Festival, produced by Endurance Magazine, will bring hundreds of high-caliber runner-cyclist athletes together from across the country to compete for these highly-sought-after qualifying slots. Bob Wendling, Vice-president, USAT-Mid-Atlantic Board of Directors described the Carrboro Classic as one that “met all of the requirements we look for in selecting a top-notch Championship venue.”

From McDougle Middle School in Carrboro, competitors will launch into an 8K (5-mile) run through scenic rural Carrboro, a 53K (32-mile) bike on the hilly roads of Orange County, and the final 8K run to the finish line.  Two spots per age group, rolling down to 5th place if need be, will be made available for the Long Course Duathlon World Championships.

“The Carrboro Classic Long Course Duathlon is one of the most beautiful race courses in the state,” stated Steve Lackey, Endurance Magazine publisher and founder of the Carrboro Classic.  “The scenic and challenging course simply propels you onward to the last and most exhilarating part of the race–crossing the finish line.  We are honored that USAT has recognized this race and selected us to serve as one of the 2008 Long Course World Championship qualifying events.”

In addition to the Long Course Duathlon, the Carrboro Classic Endurance Sports Festival will include a Super Sprint Duathlon consisting of a 2.4-mile run, a 12-mile bike and a 1.2-mile run; and the Wild West 8k run.

Benefiting Habitat for Humanity-Durham and the Swim for Smiles Foundation, the Carrboro Classic Endurance Sports Festival is produced by Endurance Magazine, in cooperation with the race’s supporting sponsors - Fleet Feet Sports, Tamara Lackey Photography, Sun Valley Bars, South Orange Rescue Squad, Clif Bar, Sage Endurance, Gatorade, Chapel Hill Home Theatre, The Bicycle Chain, ActiveZach, and Monster Energy Drink.
