The inaugural Newport News One City Marathon will take place on Sunday, March 15, 2015. Presented by Newport News Shipbuilding, the marathon will run the entire 26-mile length of the city, with Newport News Park as the setting for the start of the race and the Victory Arch in downtown serving as the finish line. Along the way, the certified course will take runners past various cultural amenities, educational institutions, businesses and neighborhoods. The marathon, which also offers a relay option, culminates at the One City, One Celebration community festival at Victory Landing Park as runners race through the finish line.

In addition to the marathon and marathon relay, there will be a Maritime 8K presented by Ferguson Enterprises and a Nautical Mile Fun Run presented by The Daily Press. The marathon weekend will also include a Friday Night Kick-Off at Downing Gross, a Health and Wellness Expo at the Newport News Marriott at City Center presented by Riverside Health Systems and the One City, One Celebration community festival.

Newport News city manager James Bourey, who is an avid runner, said, “The marathon was developed as a way to help bring the city together. Newport News is a great city with much diversity and many assets. Coincidentally, the geography of the city is ideal for a marathon. This is a perfect way for our citizens to celebrate all that is good in our city and at the same time gain additional national exposure for Newport News.”

Boston Marathon race director Dave McGillivray was the first runner to register for the Newport News One City Marathon and will be the featured speaker at the pre-race dinner on Saturday, March 14, 2015.
